About Us
James Hartman, CPAI have over a decade of experience in public accounting, and have had the pleasure of being exposed to most of what public accounting has to offer. My experience has ranged from assurance work to tax compliance to consulting. Somewhere along the way I found my passion - closely held (aka small) businesses. This practice area has allowed me the opportunity to develop meaningful professional relationships, not just a "vendor" status. So my focus has been developing the skills needed to best serve these clients. Which is why I am well versed in corporate, partnership and individual taxation, as well as payroll, state, local and various other tax issues. I also have been able to leverage my financial accounting and QuickBooks experience in order to assist clients with various accounting issues. My passion for business and the pride I take in being a CPA, show through both in the quality of my work and my commitment to my clients.
My MissionMy mission is to help clients maintain financial viability in the present, while taking a proactive approach to achieve future goals. This requires open communication to reach an understanding of my clients' needs through research and sound analysis. James Hartman PA is dedicated to meeting these goals with high standards of excellence and professionalism. Our TeamSarah Sherlock - Office Manager Sarah began working for the firm in August 2015 after graduating from Flagler College Tallahassee with a bachelor’s degree in accounting (Magna Cum Laude!). Family friend turned office manager, Sarah has made it even more rewarding to have her as part of our work family now. She oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm and is dedicated to ensuring a seamless and positive experience for both our clients and staff. Known for her exceptional organizational and critical-thinking skills, she is the first person our team turns to when challenges arise. Outside of work, she is passionate about fitness and wellness and enjoys traveling with her husband, daughter and son.
Shelby Gowdy - Administrative Assistant Shelby joined the firm in November 2023 and quickly became administrative assistant extraordinaire. From assisting clients with a friendly smile, to keeping our office paper-free and thriving in a digital world, to ensuring everyone’s calendars are up to date, she is an integral part of our team. Shelby is the breath of fresh air in our office and loves to share her zest for life with her husband and son.
Rhett Knox - Tax Staff Email: rhett@jhartmancpa.com Rhett relocated from Panama City Beach in July 2024 and joined our team as our full-time staff accountant. With several years of experience in both banking and tax preparations, his wealth of knowledge has helped grow our practice. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and is currently a coach at Modern Fitness Tallahassee.
Stephanie Beaty Hyatt - Remote Bookkeeper
Stephanie is not only James’s sister-in-law, super mom to his 6 awesome nieces and nephews, but also the first employee of James Hartman PA. She has decades of bookkeeping and accounts payable experience and works remotely from South Florida. We are lucky to have her help us grow this family business.
Lesya Wilbur - Remote Bookkeeper Lesya joined our firm in January 2020 and has extensive experience running a family-operated business. She has been able to lend her skills and apply them to the clients she supports, using her knowledge of business practices. She is the natural caretaker of all of us in the office and always keeps us laughing, even across the miles in her new home of South Florida.
Kelley Barton - Accounting Assistant Kelley is our newest addition and has joined the firm as our Accounting Assistant. With years of prior experience working with a CPA, she's never afraid to ask questions, strives to understand the bigger picture and contributes to a more efficient workflow with her keen eye for detail. She's a mom of 3 and a Tallahassee native. Shannon Horning - Tax & Accounting Professional Shannon joined our firm in 2021 and has become a valuable member of our team. Whether she’s preparing tax returns or assisting with bookkeeping, she consistently demonstrates versatility and willingness to help wherever needed. Truly a jack of all trades, Shannon plays an essential role in the success of our firm. Shannon enjoys traveling and exploring new places in her camper with her husband. We always look forward to hearing about her adventures and the memorable stories she brings back to share. Her enthusiasm for life and new experiences is contagious, and we are grateful to have her as part of our team.
